Vertical Video School 2023

Are you a social justice activist who uses social media to raise awareness, grow solidarity, and shift  consciousness? Do you know the power of short vertical videos on social media and want to learn to make great videos yourself? 

If yes, then you should apply to join the Peoples Media Consortium (PMC) month-long Vertical Video School to develop the skills needed to  create effective short-form video content that engages a large audience for social justic

ABOUT THE SCHOOL:

The School is designed as an experiential action learning cycle where we will collectively, draw on theory and our practice, and where we will reflect and learn from each other’s efforts.

The Session will take place online on Wednesdays from 10am to 12pm: 

  • 1 November: GOING VIRAL: How to reach a massive audience? What is the algorithm?  What is the role of influencers?
  • 8 November: MAKE IT STICK: What video content works? What issues and angles? What emotion and language? What technical aspects of light and sound? 
  • 22 November: GET IMPACT: Do we know what we want to accomplish? How do we set achievable goals? How do we measure our success?  How do we learn from our impact? 
  • 29 November: IN REAL TIME: How do we edit and stream live on our phones?

The School will be facilitated by Nosana Sondiyazi of the Yetu Infortech Collective

PARTICIPANT STIPEND:

Participants who complete the week’s session and assignment will receive a weekly stipend of R100 airtime and R200 cash to cover any expenses. 

SELECTION CRITERIA: 

We will be selecting a group of activists from across Southern Africa who  are diverse in their age, gender, the languages they speak, the issues they tackle, and the social media platform/s they are active on. Successful applicants will: 

  • Have an existing social media presence
  • Have a cell phone with a camera to record video 
  • Be available about 4 hours a week to attend a session and complete the weekly assignments
  • Be nominated by a PMC member orgaanisation.
